Report: Impact of Ornamental Horticulture on Canada's Economy
The Impact of Ornamental Horticulture on Canada’s Economy
Ornamental horticulture is a significant and growing part of Canada's agricultural sector, contributing over $14.48 billion to the national economy and supporting more than 132,000 jobs. In 2007 alone, Canadian consumers spent nearly $8.1 billion on ornamental products and landscaping services. The sector includes floriculture, nurseries, sod, and Christmas trees—led by provinces such as Ontario, British Columbia, and Quebec, which together account for nearly 90% of gross farm receipts.
This diverse sector contributes economically and environmentally, addressing challenges such as urban heat, pollution, and quality of life through green infrastructure. Investments in plants and green spaces are linked to higher property values and consumer well-being. Despite facing challenges like increased input costs, labour shortages, and global competition, the sector has shown resilience and growth, particularly in sod and nursery production.
The report underscores the need for innovation, coordinated policy support, and a national strategy to amplify the sector’s economic, environmental, and social impact. Strategic opportunities include market development, consumer education, investment in research, and strengthening the sector’s voice in public policy.
